Dominican Ethos

The Dominican Ethos is the foundation upon which all aspects of life at Dominican College are built. Rooted in the values of Veritas (Truth), compassion, justice, community, and a deep commitment to faith and reason, the Dominican tradition guides our approach to education, relationships, and the development of the whole person.

Our school is deeply influenced by the legacy of the Dominican Sisters who established Dominican College in Galway in 1858. Their vision of education as a means of nurturing both the mind and the spirit continues to inspire our work today. We are proud to carry forward their mission of service, learning, and leadership grounded in Gospel values.

Our ethos calls us to seek truth in all things — academically, morally, and spiritually. This pursuit of truth inspires a culture of inquiry, critical thinking, and integrity within our school. We encourage students to ask questions, to think deeply, and to develop a lifelong love of learning.

The Dominican tradition also emphasises care for others and commitment to justice. In Dominican College, this means creating a community where kindness, inclusion, and respect are central, and where students are encouraged to become active citizens who work for the common good.

Through prayer, reflection, service, and a values-based curriculum, the Dominican ethos — shaped by the pioneering spirit of the Dominican Sisters in Galway — continues to influence every aspect of school life, preparing students not only for exams, but for lives of purpose and integrity.
