Why Choose Leaving Cert Business? 💡

Business offers highly relevant, transferable skills for both college and career. It's the ideal subject if you are interested in:

  • Financial Literacy: Understanding personal finance, budgeting, insurance, and investment—essential life skills.

  • The World Around You: Gaining insight into how the Irish and global economy operates, how businesses impact society, and how current affairs relate to enterprise.

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Learning the process of starting and growing a business, from generating ideas to managing risk and finance.

  • Core Management Skills: Developing competencies in leadership, communication, planning, and people management (HR) that are valuable in any professional field.

Business provides a practical, real-world context for learning and is an excellent foundation for degrees in Business, Finance, Law, Marketing, and beyond.

Leaving Certificate Business: (2025/2026)

The academic year 2025/2026 marks a significant point for Leaving Certificate Business, with two different courses running for the final time. It's essential for students to be clear on which specification they are following:

6th Year Students (LC Exam 2026) - The Old Syllabus

Students in 6th year are completing the current (old) Leaving Certificate Business Syllabus.

  • Content: Follows the established three sections: People in Business, Enterprise, and The Business Environment.

  • Assessment: The final grade is based entirely on the terminal written examination in June 2026 (100% weighting).

  • Focus: Preparation should concentrate on comprehensive coverage of all course units and mastering the format for both short-answer questions and the long, essay-style questions.

5th Year Students (LC Exam 2027) - The New Specification

Students starting 5th year in September 2025 are the first cohort to study the New Leaving Certificate Business Specification.

  • Content: The course is structured around four Strands (Business in Action, Understanding Enterprise, Leading in Business, Being Informed) and a Unifying Strand (Investigating Business). There is a greater focus on key competencies and modern themes like Digital Transformation, Ethics & Sustainability.

  • Assessment: The final grade is split between two components:

    1. Written Examination: 60% of the total marks.

    2. Additional Assessment Component (AAC): The Investigative Study: 40% of the total marks. This is an externally assessed, research-based project, reducing the pressure on the final written exam.

  • Focus: Students must engage with the material through application and research. Developing the skills for the Investigative Study (AAC), which will be completed over the two years, is critical for success.

Key Takeaway for All Students

This academic year requires clarity from both year groups on their specific requirements. While 6th years are on a familiar assessment path, 5th years must embrace the shift towards continuous, skills-based assessment with the introduction of the 40% Investigative Study.
